Henry Moore Studio Residency Week

16 – 19 October, Henry Moore Studios & Gardens

TIn late October, I participated in a week-long residency at Henry Moore Studios and Gardens with the MA Sculpture 25 cohort, delivering workshops to A-level art student groups, and drop-in sessions for families and adults. These activities responded to this year’s theme Encounters, exploring how everyday interactions shape our ideas, experiences, and relationships. Our workshops, Reinventing Reality, encouraged participants to reinterpret everyday objects as sculptural forms, using clay, cardboard, sheep wool, and even words. Participants imagined forms based on descriptions, while in the co-hosted Agency of Objects workshops with Olivia Bax, participants engaged in playful writing experiments to uncover the secret lives and thoughts of objects.

My role as lead facilitator, co-leading Reinventing Reality sessions with Bea Underwood, provided invaluable hand-on experience in planning, collaboration, and managing group dynamics. I learned that different groups respond uniquely, that clear and accessible language is essential, and that visual demonstrations are critical in guiding participants. The experience strengthened my confidence in workshop facilitation, from session planning to managing energy and engagement. Most importantly, it provided a hands-on experience in preparing for the Research Festival, where I plan to run a workshop for students and young-adults exploring close reading and close writing. Ultimately, it equipped me to deliver my workshop with greater confidence and adaptability.
