MA Perspectives at Middlesex University London
– 1 October 2025
In collaboration with Bea Underwood, we delivered an MA Perspectives Talk on Material and Meaning to BA Sculpture students at Middlesex University London, as part of our teaching experience within Unit 3. The talk highlighted both the similarities and differences between Bea’s and my approaches to materials and processes within our practices, as well as reflecting on our journey and experiences of the MA. For example, we discussed the role of the domestic and its materials in our work, and how we gather and consider materials for their potential in storage, containment, and perception of function.
I reflected on my journey and development from BA to MA, particularly in relation to my chosen materials and processes, and what they bring to my work. I spoke about shifting from more universal reading of materials to personal significance. I discussed co-opting materials from different disciplines such as cotton paper from print-making, as a means of exploring expanded forms of sculpture. I also addressed my investigation of the immaterial like emotions, memories, reflections, and relations; as well as the body as material, its visceral traces in my own hair, breath, and my mind’s eye.
Delivering this talk consolidated my knowledge and approach to my making, helped me articulate my research more clearly, and reaffirmed the value of sharing work through presentations and dialogue as well as exhibitions.
